The Growth in Turbulence: the Analysis on the Rising of Modern Shanghai Economy

¡ò Wei-guo FAN

¡¡¡¡To research the early modern Shanghai economy in an overall and systematic way is a very large project, the paper tries to analyze some aspects of the early modern economy of Shanghai in the view of the changing of social economy and the moving of new market economy .In order to study the trends of the rising of modern Shanghai economy, I am guided by Marxism , and use the theory such as economy history, developing economics, market economics and sociology etc.
¡¡¡¡The paper is about 330 thousand words.
¡¡¡¡During the course of the capitalist economy globalization from the middle of 19th century to the beginning of 20th century, the area of Shanghai port formed the market shape of semi-periphery. The early modern Shanghai economy developed in the market shape of semi-periphery. In this paper, I put forward the theory of Activation and growing to study of the model of the early modern economy in Shanghai. As a species of the moving of economy, the market exchange didn't transplant from the foreign country, it depended on the market economy in traditional society of China. But when strong external force destroyed the restriction of traditional economy, it expended its market capacity. When the strength of internal market combined with the strength of foreign market, and which the strength enlarged to a certain degree, it could led to the qualitative change-the market connections covered from the part to the whole, and the market regulation spread from general goods to all economic resources. The theory of Activation and growing refer to the market economy which grew in strength and built the moving of modern economy while it was effected by internal and foreign factors and absorbed many things.
¡¡¡¡The paper analyzes three beneficial elements of market expanding and moving of early modern economy when Shanghai was opened as a port: The first, the expanding of market flow and the universality of merchandise in Shanghai showed three chains of commodity cycle: the commodity of trade production , the commodity cycle of industry and commodity cycle of consume of life, among them, the commodity cycle of trade production and industry production were important to the shape of Shanghai market economy, and formed the market network of Shanghai port economy. The second, the international and plural of competition for markets improved the level and efficiency of the competition in Shanghai market, and raised the competition ability of Shanghai market economy and industrial enterprise, At the same time, the port economy expanded and evolved as a synthetic economic center in the market rule . The third, a certain different character of modern Shanghai formed the resources of the market economy, such as migrates, concession and port provided many labors, economic talents, moneys and ram material to the development of Shanghai market economy. The resources of Shanghai were the important terms to the start of early Shanghai modern economy. It showed some differences character in economic position, social environment and human resources etc. That formed invisible capital superior to other areas in China. The invisible capital affected the modern economy recessively, it was difficult to quantify, but it played a positive role for a long time, and its influence exceeded material capital.
¡¡¡¡The paper analyzes the elements that restricted the development of early modern industry , and especially focus on that modern trade of China and excessive commercialization that restricted the industrialization.
The modern industry of China was developed by the way of import substitution. in 1920s,the import substitution of Shanghai industry produced some effect, but when the West further invaded our country in economic field, the development of Shanghai industrial structure was restricted greatly. The export of Shanghai inducts increased gradually from the 20th century, but it limited in the southeast Asia, and the number was very small. Why the industrial products in modern China couldn't sell well on foreign market was because its poor quality, bad style, and unstandardized etc, and them its competitive power was very weak, and couldn't enlarge export effectively. It was the reasons about that China couldn't develop the export substitution. As a poor agriculture country, China who exported primary was the only way. The key channel that China gained the international purchasing power was to export farm produce. Because the silk and tea of China was absent in quality and standardization, China lost the power of fixing price, and the profit dropped greatly. For the portion of the silk and of China withered in the world market, the exported product of China reduced gradually and inclined to periphery, which was the main reason that weakened the ability of export in modern China.
¡¡¡¡Japan's rising and its economic invasion were the chief reason that worsened the China trade condition: the raw material provision and industry products selling, especially its products of textile and other light industries mainly depended on China market. I can conclude that China provided a good external environment with the development of Japanese industrialization, on the country, Japanese industrialization and its ¡¡¡¡economic invasion worsened and external condition of Chinese industrialization.
¡¡¡¡The paper analyzes the relations between industrialization and commercialization in Shanghai early modernization, and indicates that there is a question which exists in the development of modern Shanghai economy, it is excessive commerciality : the first, the commercial speculation overflowed and went deep to the social and economic life; the second, the trade profit was high; the third, the link in the commercial circulation was complicated; the fourth, the govemment's economic policy showed a commercial trend; the fifth, the loan from banking institution mainly put into commerce but few to industry; the sixth, the social consume was precocious; the seventh, the commercial capital held superiority in the structure of industrial capital. ¡¡¡¡All of these evolved a negative influence to the development of Shanghai industrialization that manifested on the circulation of social capital, market system and the ideal of business management etc. The shallow expanding of modern Shanghai's commerce and the complicated link circulation weakened the ability and direction of the development of Shanghai market economy. The market expanded horizontality but not verticality led a bad state to the moving of economy, which I name as market superficiality. The paper advances that in the business management of all circles of modern Shanghai economic field existed a trend of simple income maximum. The system of circulation, production and finance didn't mate each other, and their relations were poor, and developed themselves, because of this, the degree of their entirety was very low. So Shanghai booming was false. Because the commerciality overflowed, and economical modernization was fragmentary, ideal system arose difficulty, and the economical modernization flooded in the tide of wild market.
¡¡¡¡The paper also analyzes some characteristics about modern Shanghai economical society.
